CBD Facial Whether it’s annoying blemishes or dull and rough skin, skin care is a daily struggle for most of us. We all aspire to get that dazzling glow, the face-on-a-magazine-cover look, and for that, it’s often quite tempting to try out the new skin care trends. Today, thanks to the easy access to all the social media platforms, all it takes is a simple click to get to any beauty blogger on Youtube, TikTok, or Instagram. Also, with everyone coming up with their very own – tried and tested – skin care trends, it is quite tempting to try something new on the face every day. However, while it may all look rather fascinating – to say the least – most of these skin care trends are actually harmful for the skin. Here’s how. How Are Some Skin Care Trends Bad? Since most of these latest trends are being promoted by bloggers and makeup artists, who are not ‘experts’ in the real sense, there isn’t a medical backing to such claims. What may work for one may actually be quite dangerous for others. So unless you have consulted your doctor or dermatologist, it’s not recommended to blindly follow whatever you see online. For a better understanding, check out this video by Dr. Shah, who’s recently gained much popularity in the world of skin care today. You may be thinking he’s popular for his skin care routine or product recommendation videos. But no, he’s actually a dermatologist and a TikToker, and he has gained all the attention from his videos on the bad skin trends that have created a lot of hype on social media today. The skin care trends you find online are actually quite shocking. For someone new to skin care without prior knowledge about the chemicals and harmful substances in the ingredients, these trends are literally a horror. You must be aware of all the harm they can cause to the skin. Sometimes, the damage can even be irreversible. As Dr. Shah iterates, such trends are a no-no! So, Dr. Shah, if you are reading this, please take a bow; thank you for standing up and calling out these bad skin care trends! An alarming number of dangerous skin care trends are currently being promoted and endorsed by influencers, bloggers, and makeup artists. We've shortlisted the top five trends here that you must be careful of falling prey to. Let's check them out: 1. Peel-Off Masks The peel-off masks are the latest trend on social media. By now, you might've seen your favorite bloggers, celebrities, influencers, and even TikTokers following the crazy peel-off trend and applying the masks on their own and a friend or beau’s face. It seems quite soothing watching them relax with cucumbers affixed to their eyes while the mask works its magic. Then, Instagram reels on to the peel-off action, where they show you all the dust, dried, dead skin, and acne that comes off, along with the mask. Finally, the camera closes in at the – of course, filter-laden – fresh and lovely face of the influencer. Dr. Penelope Tympanidis, a consultant dermatologist, thinks that these masks actually lead to blocked pores. Moreover, they only rip away the top layer. There's no such thing as deep cleaning here. The pus and blackheads that sit underneath the skin, deep inside the pores, stay hidden in their places. Plus, the masks rip off the essential oils from your skin. That often leads to the sebaceous glands producing more oil, and hence increased oiliness leads to the skin getting prone to acne and skin breakouts. But that's not all there's to it. These masks have actual glue – yes, the glue – that gives them the sticky effect. Just imagine what it can do to your face? So these peel-off masks are what we call just a quick fix. They don't give lasting results, and if used regularly, they can actually do more harm than good in the long run. 2. Excessive Exfoliation Exfoliation has a number of benefits for the skin. That's why it is always part of the skin care routine followed in about all skin care trends. However, doing too much or too rigorous exfoliation can harm the skin. To understand how let's first see how exfoliation affects the skin. Most exfoliation means scrubbing. When you exfoliate, you scrub-clean the skin. That helps the skin get rid of dirt, clogged pores, pollutants, etc. This gives you cleaner, healthier-looking skin. When you over-exfoliate, that means you over-scrub, i.e., you are literally rough to your skin. Too much of it can lead to irritation. So the max you should go with exfoliation is once or twice a week.
